In the field of research peptides, several units of measurement are used on labels, certificates of analysis, and laboratory equipment. At first, the terms mg, ml, and units may seem complicated, but each represents different information.
This article simply explains the difference between these measurements.
1. What is a mg (milligram)?
Mg stands for milligram. It is a unit of mass that indicates the amount of compound present in a vial.
Example: A vial labeled: 10 mg
means that the vial contains 10 milligrams of active ingredient before preparation.
Therefore, mg represents the total amount of the peptide.
2. What is a ml (milliliter)?
ml stands for milliliter. It is a unit of liquid volume.
In a laboratory setting, a liquid is often added to obtain a solution with a specific concentration.
Example: 10 mg in 2 ml
Means:
Total quantity: 10 mg
Total volume: 2 ml
Concentration: 5 mg/ml
3. What is a unit?
Units are simply a different way of reading a volume on certain graduated instruments. They do not directly represent milligrams.
The relationship always depends on:
✔ Total quantity in mg
✔ Total volume in ml
✔ Final concentration
Why is understanding concentration important?
Two vials with the same quantity in mg can have different concentrations depending on the volume added.
Example:
10 mg + 1 ml will be more concentrated than:
10 mg + 5 ml
Same total quantity, but different dilution.
